Organic Assam from the Brahmaputra valley in northern India, in Orange Pekoe grade. Orange Pekoe describes the leaf size rather than the flavour: a larger, well twisted whole leaf rather than the broken grades that go into teabags. It brews a lighter, cleaner cup than the dust does, with the malty Assam character still clearly there.
Take four serves if you have only ever had Assam as an ingredient in a breakfast blend. Drinking it on its own is a different experience and it is worth establishing whether you like the leaf itself before you commit.
A teaspoon, freshly boiled water, three to four minutes. It is one of the few in the range that genuinely improves with milk, and it will take sugar without falling apart.
